Artistic director Hari Krishnan's inDANCE premieres Purnima/FullMoon, a full-length interdisciplinary multimedia dance work. The work bridges movement, voice, text and memory, reinterpreting courtly motifs such as the intoxication of new love, the longing of separated lovers, and the culturally-hybrid colonial past of "English marching-bands" and "salutes". The production brings South Indian court dance into an original, dynamic world of music, film and light.

About the Show:
Embedded in a contemporary aesthetic framework, Purnima/FullMoon is a multimedia dance- work. Based on the hereditary compositions of the female dancers and male dance-masters of South India, the work is the result of over a decade of painstaking and fruitful research in remote villages of South India. Purnima/FullMoon draws inspiration from the salon performances given by courtesans in this region until the early part of the twentieth century.

In keeping with inDANCE's mandate, we continue to collaborate with artists engaged in various forms of cultural practice to produce original Canadian works, and to create new, cutting-edge work rooted in Indian dance and music. Purnima/FullMoon represents the creative efforts of wonderful artists, including visual designer Cylla von Tiedemann, video editor Boyd Bonitzke, research consultant Dr. Devesh Soneji, lighting designer Christopher Dennis, interdisciplinary artist Katherine Duncanson, vocalist Sheela Bharath, percussionist Gowri Shankar and violinist Thanadevy Mithradeva. We are truly excited to be presenting principal dancer Dr. Srividya Natarajan, who is currently guest artist-in-residence with inDANCE.
